Iberia Baggage Fees (2026)

Updated 2026-06-24

Quick summary

Iberia is Spain's full-service flag carrier, and its Economy cabin is sold in fare tiers — typically Basic, Optimal/Classic, Comfort, and Flex. Every fare includes a free cabin bag plus a personal item; the difference is hold luggage. Economy Basic has no free checked bag, while the higher Economy fares include one 23kg bag. Iberia prices hold luggage in euros (or local currency) and the amount changes by route and how far ahead you pay, so always confirm in Iberia's online tools before flying.

At a glance

🎒 Personal item

Free on every fare: one personal item such as a handbag or laptop bag, up to 40 x 30 x 15 cm, that must fit under the seat in front of you.

🧳 Carry-on

Free on every fare: one cabin bag up to 56 x 40 x 25 cm (including wheels and handles) and a maximum of 10kg in Economy and Premium Economy (14kg in Business). The bag must fit in the overhead bin and you must be able to lift it yourself; oversize or overweight cabin bags may be checked into the hold.

🔁 Change & cancellation

Flexibility depends on the fare tier. Economy Basic is the most restrictive, with changes incurring a fee plus any fare difference and the fare being largely non-refundable (taxes may still be refundable). Higher fares such as Comfort and Flex allow changes for a lower fee or for free and offer better refund terms. A short cancellation grace period applies to bookings made directly with Iberia. Always check the exact fare conditions at the time of booking.

Other common fees

Excess weight (US, Mexico, Canada routes)fixed €75 / $100 / £65 per bag
Excess weight (other international / domestic)about €12 – €15 per extra kg
Airport vs. online bag purchasebuying at the airport costs more — pay online to save up to ~50%
Advance seat selection (standard)from a few euros, route dependent

How to avoid extra fees

  • Every fare — even Economy Basic — includes a free 10kg cabin bag plus a personal item, so a short trip may cost you nothing extra.
  • Economy Basic has no free hold bag; if you must check luggage, compare adding a bag vs. booking the Optimal/Comfort fare that already includes one 23kg bag.
  • Buy checked bags online or via the Iberia app up to 24 hours before departure — airport prices are noticeably higher.
  • Watch the per-kg excess fees on flights to the US, Mexico and Canada, where overweight bags are charged a flat €75 / $100 / £65.
  • Use Iberia's online baggage tools before you fly, because the euro price changes with route, season, and how early you pay.
